Development of an Innovative Laminating Technique for Laminated Safety Glass

The Chair of Structural Engineering is collaborating with Fotoverbundglas Marl GmbH to develop an innovative lamination technique for laminated safety glass. Compared to conventional lamination methods, this approach allows for customized parameter settings and thus increased manufacturing efficiency when using different materials as interlayers.

Laminated safety glass generally consists of at least two outer glass panes that are bonded together over their entire surface via polymer interlayers. In addition to the commonly used polyvinyl butyral, other materials exhibit more favorable properties as interlayers in certain applications.

However, the various interlayers used in laminated glass require specific pressure and temperature settings that cannot be economically achieved using conventional methods. The new lamination technology allows for the individual adjustment of process parameters based on the specific configuration of the production line, thereby enabling cost-effective manufacturing.
