Glossary & Translations

Glossary

As part of the ongoing internationalization process and in connection with the HRK audit "Internationalization of Universities", German-English translations are naturally used on campus, on the homepage and in various publications. An English glossary has been compiled at the University of Siegen to facilitate uniform translation.

We would like to thank all colleagues from academia and administration for their commitment in creating and revising it - without their input, this first version would not have been possible.

The glossary covers the most important terms used in everyday university life, from the name of the university, individual university institutions / departments and academic terms to the names of degree programs. It forms a sustainable basis for future translations and ensures a uniform English-language presentation of the university. The Rectorate of the University of Siegen approved the glossary at its meeting on 30.03.2017.

The glossary is in American English (AE). However, British English (BE) can still be used for applications, academic publications and individual contact at the university's discretion.

Note: An interactive presentation of the glossary including a search function is planned.

Changes and additions

  • The current version of the glossary forms the basis. Changes and additions, e.g. when a new degree program is introduced, are of course possible.
  • Changes and additions will be collected. The version of the glossary is updated before each new semester, on April 1 and October 1 of each calendar year.
  • Changes and additions can only be entered if they are reported by the person responsible for the area in question (e.g. head of department). In this way, we want to ensure that no different translations are reported for one term.

In order to be globally visible in the academic world, the University of Siegen strives for internationalization in all areas.
