Why learn sign language?

German Sign Language (DGS) allows you to communicate directly with deaf people and discover their world. In our courses, you’ll learn practical ways to sign words, sentences, and everyday communication while also practicing nonverbal forms of expression.

Those who master DGS can apply what they’ve learned directly, for example, in projects related to inclusion, education, or social work. Learning sign language, therefore, means discovering a new way of communicating and broadening both your personal and professional horizons.

User plus_hellblau

Registration for our DGS courses in the 2026/27 winter semester takes place via unisono and is available during the first and second registration periods:

Registration Phase 1: August 17 – September 6, 2026
Registration Phase 2: September 21 – October 4, 2026

User x_hellblau

If you are unable to attend a course after all, you can drop it via unisono from September 7 through September 20, 2026. After this date, please send an email to sprachenzentrum@spz.uni-siegen.de
to drop the course.

Admission Criteria

Priority admission will be given to students in the following programs: Teacher Education with a Specialization in Special Education, Social Work, and Psychology, who are in higher semesters of their bachelor’s and/or master’s programs. Students admitted in this manner will participate in a survey regarding their motivation for taking the course. Should any spots become available following this process, they will be reallocated. Admission criteria will then include, among other factors, the number of semesters completed and the degree program.

Please note the terms used in unisono:

Admitted = You have been admitted and have a spot in the course.

Waitlist = You do not currently have a spot in the course, but you are on the waitlist. If you are assigned a spot, your status will be changed to “admitted.”

Registered = You are only registered for the course. Your registration is currently being processed. You do not currently have a spot in the course.

Canceled = Your registration has been canceled.

Important: Only attend courses for which you have been admitted.

If you’ve been admitted to a course, you’ll see this in unisono. You’ll also receive an email with further information at your student email address well in advance of the course start date.
