Why learn Polish?
Polish is close - geographically, historically and socially. Learning the language means consciously using and deepening this proximity.
Whether at university, at work or in your personal life: Polish opens doors to international careers, cross-border cooperation and genuine encounters at eye level.
Polish is a challenge - but that's exactly what makes it exciting.
This is what Polish sounds like:
"Był to dzień piękny. Słońce rozlewało ciepło łagodne i blask jeszcze jasny, ale już odchodzący za dziewiątą górę, za dziesiątą rzekę. Szereg drzew Alei, których widok tak dużo wspomnień nasuwał, okrył się już rdzą czerniejącą. W dali, z pomiędzy koron kulistych jeszcze, wysuwały się gałęzie bez liści, jak smutny jakiś drogowskaz.
Doktor minął bramę i wolno schodził w głąb parku. Ogromne liście klonów płynęły z drzew i migały przed oczyma nad ziemią to tu, to tam jak złote ptaki."
"Ludzie bezdomni" (1900), Stefan Żeromski

Our Polish teacher
Ewa Darmstätter teaches Polish with great enthusiasm for her first language and Polish culture. She has lived in Siegen since 2007 and passes on her love of the language in her courses. She studied foreign languages in adult education and helps learners discover Polish step by step.
In her lessons, she shows you that Polish is not as difficult as many people think - words such as "cyrkiel", "gitara", "majster", "ryzyko" or "szynka" may even sound familiar to you. In addition to the language, you will also learn about Polish culture, literature and traditions. She looks forward to welcoming you to the course.
Polish as a foreign language is offered at more than 20 universities in Germany - including the University of Siegen.
Polish authors have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature four times: Henryk Sienkiewicz (1905), Władysław Reymont (1924), Czesław Miłosz (1980) and Olga Tokarczuk (2018, awarded in 2019).
It is estimated that around 13 billion pierogi - filled dumplings - are eaten in Poland every year.
The Polish language has seven grammatical cases: Nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental, locative and vocative.
