Design is one of the most essential elements of architectural studies and should emerge iteratively as a comprehensive architectural concept through the development of corresponding sub-concepts related to form, function, and structure. A holistic approach to the design and planning process makes it possible to accomplish this challenging task.

The summer semester of 2026 focuses on the design of a two-court sports hall for the Leonardo da Vinci School in Wolfsburg. The school complex, built in the 1960s and consisting of a comprehensive school, an elementary school, and a daycare center, has already been renovated, expanded, and remodeled several times. A second sports hall, which was demolished due to structural defects, is to be rebuilt at a different location. In Wolfsburg, schools and educational institutions hold special significance. The “Autostadt” still competes with Stuttgart and Munich for skilled workers and engineers, for whose families the educational landscape is a particularly important factor. The city was conceived on the drawing board during the Nazi era alongside the VW plant, then known as the KdF plant. The city experienced rapid growth in the first decades following the end of World War II. Since then, Wolfsburg has placed great value on renowned architecture, such as that of Alvar Aalto, Hans Scharoun, Friedrich Wilhelm Krämer, and Zaha Hadid.
