The University of Siegen is modernizing approximately 150 classrooms and seminar rooms

ERNA stands for “Renovation of Lecture Hall and Media Technology at the University of Siegen.” A total of approximately 150 rooms across all campus locations are being renovated and modernized. The goal is to create optimal conditions for contemporary teaching and learning.

The measures range from new furniture, flooring, ceilings, and walls to acoustic improvements and state-of-the-art media technology. As a result, the University of Siegen will offer sustainable learning spaces that accommodate a variety of teaching formats.

In recent years, state-of-the-art seminar rooms and lecture halls have been built, particularly on the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße campus and the Unteres Schloss campus. The renovation of facilities at other locations ensures that teaching and learning across the entire University of Siegen can take place using state-of-the-art resources—with digital infrastructure, improved room acoustics, flexible furniture, and an appealing design.

A total of about 150 rooms spread across all of the University of Siegen’s properties are being modernized. These include seminar rooms and lecture halls, in particular the “Bunte Hörsäle” on the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße campus and the auditorium on the Paul-Bonatz-Straße campus. The Audimax on the AR campus will be equipped with new media technology.

The specific measures may vary depending on the room and location. Key points include:

• Interior design: New floors, ceilings, curtains, and wall paint
• Acoustics and lighting: e.g., sound-absorbing suspended ceilings, energy-efficient lighting
• Furnishings
• Media technology: including projectors, speakers, cameras, and electronic whiteboards with cameras in lecture halls and large seminar rooms

Together, these elements create a modern learning environment that optimally supports teaching, group work, and hybrid formats.

The measures are scheduled to be implemented by the end of 2026. The work will be carried out in phases to minimize disruption to classes and exams.

The “Colorful Lecture Halls”—Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green—are a striking feature of the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße campus. They, too, are undergoing extensive modernization: new lecture hall furniture (folding tables and chairs), new floors, walls, and ceilings, and new media technology. The colors that give the halls their names will be retained in some form.

The Audimax will also be equipped with completely new media technology. In addition, plans are in place to upgrade the lighting.

At least one so-called “highlight room” is to be created in each property.
These rooms are equipped with particularly flexible and innovative features, including swiveling, movable furniture, flexible whiteboards, cameras, and ceiling-mounted microphones. They are well-suited for new teaching concepts and allow for an easy transition to, for example, small-group work. 

There may be some disruptions during the modernization work. Since work is being carried out while the university remains in operation and within existing buildings, and various contractors are involved, we unfortunately cannot completely avoid occasional noise, last-minute adjustments, or temporary changes to room assignments.

We therefore ask for your understanding that short-notice changes may occur in some cases. The university schedules construction work to accommodate exam periods and peak class times. Ultimately, everyone will benefit from this project in the long term. These temporary disruptions will help improve teaching and learning conditions in a sustainable way.

Yes, construction work may also result in last-minute room changes. Faculty and students are therefore asked to check their class schedules for any room changes. The Room Administration strives to announce and communicate room changes well in advance. However, last-minute changes cannot be ruled out, so it is recommended that you check your schedule yourself.

In the summer semester of 2026, priority rooms or internal rooms—such as those allocated to the Schools—will be managed centrally as part of the planning process. If you have any questions, please contact the Central Room Administration. 

The modernization is a collaborative project involving several departments at the university. Department 5 (Building and Real Estate Management) and ZIMT are leading the planning and implementation. 

The University of Siegen is receiving approximately 9 million euros for the ERNA project from the ZSL Investment Support Program of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The program supports universities in expanding and modernizing their infrastructure.
The goal is to establish a modern, digital, and sustainable foundation for teaching and learning throughout the state.
