A colorful potpourri of science and music

The public event series "Saturdays at 12" at the University of Siegen kicks off the summer semester on April 18. Participants experience bloody history, discuss the new military service and go on a musical journey around the world.

Readings, lectures, concerts - the University of Siegen's "Saturdays at 12" knowledge program starts the summer semester in April. The House of Science is offering three to four events in both the summer and winter semester 2026. And this will take place in Siegen city center on the Lower Castle campus during prime market hours. Exciting authors, musicians and scientists have announced their intention to engage in conversation with interested members of the public. Participation is free of charge - prior registration is not necessary.

A matter of taste

Everyone knows it exists. Everyone thinks they have it. But no one has ever seen it: taste, our sense of beauty, the antenna of happiness and the tactile sense of our longing. The opening event on April 18 at 12 noon with Prof. Dr. Ulrich Raulff will focus on this very taste. Raulff, former head of the culture department at the FAZ, will be presenting his book "Wie es Euch gefällt. A History of Taste" with him. Location: Seminar Center US-S 002, Obergraben 25 in Siegen

"The bloody bloody history of antiquity without all the boring stuff"

Anyone standing in awe today in front of the Acropolis in Athens or the beguiling frescoes of Pompeii can easily overlook the broad trail of blood that the Greeks and Romans have left through history. Author Stefan von der Lahr will take his guests on a journey into ancient history on May 9 at 12 noon. Musical journey around the world

"Music at 12" invites you to a musical journey around the world together with soprano Lena Maria Kramer and pianist Christopher Bruckmann on July 4 at 12 noon. They will perform songs and arias by Otto Nicolai, Carlisle Floyd and Leonard Bernstein, among others. Venue: Hörsaalzentrum Unteres Schloss, US - C Foyer

"German middle class under Hitler"

"The Rising Stars: German Middle Class under Hitler. A Family History" is the title of the book by Prof. Dr. Christina Strunck. She will be our guest on October 31 at 12 noon. The story: A self-made man from the provinces does good business during the Nazi dictatorship thanks to close connections and rope teams. The family business soon sets up a camp for forced laborers on the company premises. Christina Strunck is the great-granddaughter of the company founder. She investigates a growing unease, searches the archives for evidence of what has long been suppressed - and finds what she is looking for. Location: Seminar Center US - S 002.

"Music at 12 - this time at 8 pm": Siegen Night of Music

On November 14, the Haus der Wissenschaft will once again be taking part in the Siegen Night of Music. The pianist and violinist Prof. Dr. Kolja Lessing will be performing compositions from Czerny to Herchenröder in the foyer of the lecture hall center US - C at the Lower Castle from 8 pm. Tickets will be issued at the entrance to the lecture hall building.

"The shining and the dark years of physics"

In the golden age of physics, our thinking and the world were revolutionized. On November 28, Tobias Hürter will be a guest on "Saturdays at 12". His topic is: "The age of uncertainty. The brilliant and dark years of physics 1895 - 1945". Hürter gives a captivating account of this era and the spectacular lives of the great geniuses of science. And he shows how inextricably linked science and world events are. Einstein, Schrödinger and Co. not only revolutionized physics, they also reinvented our world, indeed our reality.
