Decision-making assistance and capacity for consent in dementia
People with dementia have the right to decide whether they wish to receive medical treatment or take part in dementia research. However, as dementia progresses, those affected may lose their ability to make complex decisions. This is referred to as incapacity to consent. In care and research practice, there is still uncertainty as to how the capacity of people with dementia to give consent can be validly assessed and, if necessary, established with the help of decision support. The manual provides practical guidelines for this.
