We make the best of the situation

A personal article published in the Siegen seniors' magazine "Durchblick" shows how everyday life, family and quality of life can still be organized despite a dementia diagnosis. Under the heading "Briefly reported" (page 13) you will find the central statements - with reference to the detailed long version.

"We are making the best of the situation"

Dementia guide project in the Siegen senior citizens' magazine "Durchblick"

The focus is on the married couple Jutta and Gerhard Sauer, who have found their way since being diagnosed with dementia in 2020 with fixed routines, cohesion and small moments of happiness - such as going for walks, traveling, spending time with their family or knitting. In their everyday lives, the couple have maintained their humorous and appreciative approach to each other despite the challenges posed by their illness.

The couple is supported by dementia guide Manuela Kremer from the Dementia Guides Network Siegen-Wittgenstein, who provides individual advice and arranges suitable services. This support service is part of the DECIDE-2 project led by Prof. Julia Haberstroh (Psychological Aging Research, University of Siegen).
