Inaugural Lecture by Prof. Monnica Klöckener
The event was opened by the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Prof. Dr. Daniel Stein. Prof. Dr. Markus Lersch, as chair of the Department of Catholic Theology, then welcomed the new faculty member.
Professor Klöckener began her lecture with a thought experiment inspired by Saša Stanišić: What if people could glimpse a brief moment of their own future? Would such a glimpse change their behavior? Building on this question, she drew a connection to late antique Christian literature. She demonstrated that ancient biographies served not only as a means of remembrance but were also used as a tool to influence readers. Through these texts, the authors sought to provide guidance, promote ideals, and inspire readers to change their own lives.
Using selected texts by Jerome and Augustine, Professor Klöckener demonstrated how biographies could become tools for spiritual guidance and pastoral care. Life stories served as examples of Christian conduct, as a means of comfort and admonition, and as an impetus for self-examination. The focus was not only on the remembered past but also on the possible future of the readers. Keeping other life paths in mind was intended to help people realign their own lives.
Following the event, a champagne reception provided an opportunity for conversation and exchange. The event brought together students, colleagues, church representatives, and family and friends of the new professor and marked the official start of her tenure as Professor of Historical Theology at the University of Siegen.
