No E-Bike Sharing at the University of Siegen for Now
How much interest is there in e-bike sharing at the University of Siegen? To answer this question, the university conducted a survey of all students in May and June 2026. The results show that while there is general interest, the level of support required to move forward with the project was not achieved. The project will therefore not be pursued further for the time being.
Students were asked whether they would use e-bike sharing in Siegen if the first half-hour were free and they were willing to pay up to four euros more per semester for it. A total of 649 students participated in the survey, which was conducted via Moodle. 545 students answered “yes,” and 104 answered “no.” The response rate represented 5.2 percent of all students in the summer semester of 2026. Relative to the entire student body, this meant that 4.3 percent supported the proposed model. It had been communicated in advance that the university would launch the project if at least 20 percent of all students expressed their willingness to use the service under these conditions.
Accordingly, the required level of support was not achieved based on these results. The Rectorate and the AStA regret that the survey did not provide a sufficient basis for introducing an e-bike-sharing program. The project will therefore not be pursued further for the time being.
However, the university remains committed to promoting bicycle use and sustainable mobility between campus locations. At the start of the winter semester, for example, the university offered group bike tours between campus locations, during which students and staff could explore the routes between the campuses together.
The Cycling Working Group is also exploring ways to promote cycling as part of everyday university life and to further improve conditions for cyclists. Representatives from the student body, the university administration, the Schools, and the staff councils are involved in this effort.
The point of contact for the Cycling Working Group is the Prorectorate for Young Researchers, Diversity, and International Affairs, headed by Prof. Dr. Petra M. Vogel.
