North Rhine-Westphalia is an internationally renowned science location. This is proven by the first state research report, which the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) has now presented together with 32 participating universities in the state. The report contains a comprehensive overview of research activities at universities and universities of applied sciences - and also presents research-related data, such as third-party funding, publications and patents. The University of Siegen has provided information for the report and is represented with its research activities.

Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science, sees the state research report as "impressive proof" that the science location NRW is one of the "top addresses" internationally: "From natural sciences to medicine, social and environmental psychology to cultural and communication science, our scientists teach and research at the highest level. One of the particular strengths of North Rhine-Westphalia is that we are strong both at the universities in the metropolitan areas and in the countryside," said Brandes.

The second part of the almost 300-page report takes a closer look at specific projects in three selected research areas: "Globalization and Sustainability", "Information Technology" and "Life and Well-being". The University of Siegen is represented in all three areas with some large-scale projects - including the Collaborative Research Centers "Media of Cooperation" and "Transformations of the Popular", the Research Training Group "Consequences of Social Assistance" and two research groups. Siegen's research in the field of quantum computing is represented by the joint project MIQRO as well as several publications and two patents.

"I am very pleased that so many scientists from our university are represented in the report with their research activities - including young colleagues who have just completed their doctorates. The presence of our university in the report shows that we conduct research in relevant subject areas and make a significant contribution to gaining new scientific knowledge," says Prof. Dr. Andreas Kolb, Prorector for Research and Networking at the University of Siegen. Prorectors Kolb would also like to thank all employees from research and administration who contributed to the Siegen section of the report.

With this report, North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the first federal states to establish state-wide research reporting based on the Core Data Set for Research (KDSF standard) recommended by the German Council of Science and Humanities. The first report is based on the years 2021 to 2023. In future, the state research report will be published every three years.
