NRW-wide RDM training program for researchers enters its 2nd round
NRW-wide RDM training program strengthens researchers in data competence
Researchers in North Rhine-Westphalia now have state-wide access to high-quality training courses in Research Data Management (RDM). The NRW-wide RDM training program bundles existing training courses and makes them publicly accessible to researchers from all disciplines and institutions throughout the state.
The training courses are developed and carried out by NRW universities themselves. These are initially existing courses that are now being opened up to a wider audience. In the long term, new training courses are also to be designed jointly in the Training, Advice and Curation Network (SBK). The training program is coordinated by the State Initiative for Research Data Management - fdm.nrw.
A key advantage of the RDM training program is that researchers can access a diverse, thematically broad program that ranges from basic introductions to specialized topics such as data management plans, publication of research data or RDM tools. The offer is particularly beneficial for so-called "niche topics", which only appeal to a few researchers due to their specifications at the individual universities. Thanks to the nationwide network, smaller but necessary courses are also successfully implemented.
The RDM training program is an important building block in the state's Research Data Management concept, which aims to provide researchers with comprehensive and cooperative support in the proper creation, use, documentation and archiving of research data. Training courses are of particular importance here: they are a central lever for sustainably strengthening the data competence of researchers in NRW.

Background:
The NRW State Concept for Research Data Management was published in 2024 and aims to strengthen the research landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia in the management of research data. In addition to infrastructure, this also includes the promotion of skills. The RDM training program is a concrete example of how cooperative, cross-university measures contribute to the implementation of the concept.
