Participation in the ICSMGE in Vienna from June 14–19, 2026

Professor Kerstin Lesny and research associates Andra Ebener, Johannes Kuhlmann, and Shuai Zhang attended the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE) in Vienna. This conference is the largest international conference in the field of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering and takes place every four years at different locations. In 1925, Karl Terzaghi published his work “Soil Mechanics Based on Soil Physics” in Vienna, thereby laying the foundation for modern soil mechanics. This special anniversary was thus fittingly celebrated at the ICSMGE. The program was designed to reflect the significance of this 100th anniversary. In addition, the Terzaghi Archive, which houses original equipment developed by Terzaghi, was opened on the occasion of the conference. A total of approximately 3,000 participants made the trip to Vienna and took advantage of the opportunity for networking and scientific exchange. In addition to plenary sessions, workshops and meetings of the ISSMGE technical committees were offered. A wide range of topics was also presented and discussed in 48 different parallel sessions.

Prof. Kerstin Lesny gave a presentation at the Technical Committee 205 (Safety and Serviceability in Geotechnical Design) workshop on the topic “Reliability level achieved in limit state design of geotechnical structures following the design approaches provided in 2nd generation Eurocode 7.” She also contributed to the workshop “Design and Verification of Geotechnical Structures – 2nd Generation Eurocode 7 – What’s New” with a presentation on shallow foundations. Andra Ebener presented a paper in the parallel session “Offshore & Risk” on “Accelerating Monte Carlo Simulations in Reliability Analysis of Slope Stability Problems,” which was prepared in collaboration with our co-author Prof. Colin Smith from the University of Sheffield, UK. In the Young Engineers Session, Johannes Kuhlmann also presented his work on “Experimental investigations on the installation and bearing behavior of full-displacement bored piles.” Last but not least, doctoral candidate Shuai Zhang had the opportunity to present his research on the mechanical behavior of enzyme-stabilized clays in a poster session.

Campus-Leben neu gedacht: Raum für Begegnungen schaffen

Das Festival, organisiert von der Fakultät für Medien- und Kulturwissenschaften, bot eine Plattform für kreative Köpfe und wissenschaftlichen Austausch. In Vorträgen wie „Medien als Spiegel der Gesellschaft“ wurden die sozialen und kulturellen Einflüsse von Film, Fernsehen und digitalen Formaten beleuchtet. Die interaktiven Workshops ermöglichten es Teilnehmenden, selbst aktiv zu werden – von Kurzfilmproduktionen bis hin zu kreativer Fotografie. „Unser Ziel ist es, Medien nicht nur als Konsumgut zu betrachten, sondern als Werkzeug, um gesellschaftliche Brücken zu bauen“, betonte Prof. Dr. Katharina Müller, die die Veranstaltung leitete.

Campus-Leben neu gedacht

Neben dem wissenschaftlichen Programm war das Festival ein lebendiger Treffpunkt auf dem Campus. Die Mensa verwandelte sich in einen Markt der Möglichkeiten, auf dem lokale Initiativen aus den Bereichen Soziales, Kultur und Nachhaltigkeit ihre Projekte vorstellten. Musikalische Acts von Studierendenbands und eine Open-Air-Kino-Vorstellung rundeten das Erlebnis ab. Besonders hervorgehoben wurde das Engagement der Teilnehmenden, die die Veranstaltung als „eine einzigartige Chance, neue Perspektiven zu gewinnen und Kontakte zu knüpfen“ beschrieben. Die Universität plant, das Festival künftig als festen Bestandteil des Campus-Lebens zu etablieren.
