Further training event of the university secretariat network: Exchange, information and perspectives

On November 5, 2025, Sabine Leukel and Petra Kauschke hosted a training event for the University Secretariat Network at the University of Siegen on behalf of the network.

Well over 50 secretaries accepted the invitation and took the opportunity to exchange ideas. After a brief informal kick-off in the foyer, the event began with a review of the development of the network, which has existed since 2013 and is institutionally anchored in the university's statutes.

The first part of the program examined the role of the university secretariats in everyday university life. It became clear how much the job description has professionalized due to digitalization and comprehensive administrative tasks. The participants emphasized the central importance of their work for smooth processes in teaching and research. The commitment of Karin Ofterdinger, who will continue to represent the interests of secretaries vis-à-vis the (University) Senate following her re-election in June 2025, was also acknowledged.

Dr. Nina Fenn and Michaela Krex from the International Office then provided information about their diverse areas of work. Particular attention was paid to export control regulations, which are also binding for universities. The participants were given practical insights into the legal framework, risk assessments and responsibilities.

In the workshop section, the secretaries worked on three topics, including the new "BIC" tool and the recording of individual strengths. The lively participation showed the great need for exchange and further development.

At the end, the focus was on future steps. The network would like to continue to campaign for a modern job description and appropriate remuneration. Interested secretaries are invited to get actively involved and help shape the further development of the network.
