University of Siegen improves in "THE subject ranking"
Very good results in THE subject ranking
The University of Siegen has further improved its international position in the current "World University Ranking by Subject" 2026 published by Times Higher Education (THE) magazine. The Physical Science subject group (physics, mathematics, chemistry/biology) is particularly successful, moving up from the 401-500 ranking group to the 301-400 ranking group compared to the previous year. With around 1,500 universities assessed worldwide, this subject group is therefore among the top 30 percent in this ranking.
The University of Siegen also achieved very good results in the Engineering subject group (Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering), which is shown separately from Computer Science for the first time in 2026. The subject group once again achieved a ranking of 301-400, confirming its strong international visibility. Computer Science is also successful, being placed in the same ranking group for the first time in its independent assessment.
The subjects of Education and Psychology were also ranked independently for the first time, each achieving a ranking of 401-500. The University of Siegen also maintained stable rankings in the Arts & Humanities and Business & Economics subject groups.
"The results show that the University of Siegen is very well positioned internationally in key subject groups and has been able to further expand its performance, particularly in research, internationality and knowledge transfer. In this context, I would like to sincerely thank all colleagues involved for their commitment to research and teaching," says Prof. Dr. Andreas Kolb, Prorector for Research, Infrastructure and Networking.
A total of eight subjects/subject groups were considered in the THE by Subject Ranking 2026: Business & Economics, Engineering, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Computer Science, Education Studies and Psychology. In some cases, several subjects are combined into subject groups. In most of the parameters assessed - including research quality, internationality and knowledge and technology transfer - the University of Siegen was able to achieve improvements compared to the previous year.
The THE subject ranking is a spin-off of the major annual university ranking published by the London-based magazine Times Higher Education in October 2025. In the 2026 THE ranking, the University of Siegen ranks among the top 600 of 2,191 ranked universities worldwide. The complete ranking is available online.
