UTS Introduces Itself

Since 2004, we at the UTS Chair of Forming Technology have been researching innovative methods for the bending of profiles and tubes under the motto “Bending in Siegen.”

Our work combines fundamental engineering principles with practical applications—always with an eye toward the demands of modern, flexible production. Our team addresses current industry challenges through basic research while also making industrial research applicable to real-world practice.

We collaborate closely with research institutions and industry partners on an international level.

Good research is forward-looking and combines the development of scientific expertise and basic research with the needs of industry. Long-term trends and future challenges in industrial production set the direction for this research. Through innovative research and strong partnerships, we are driving the sustainable advancement of forming technology.

Our Research Profile

The Chair of Metal Forming Technology in Siegen is actively shaping the transformation of manufacturing technology through two key research areas. Each research area is assigned to a specialized group within the chair.

The Bending Technology and Quality Research Group focuses on pioneering profile and sheet metal bending processes, the use of mechanism controllers, and the development of stable manufacturing processes, geometric prediction, and flexible processes.

Our work in the Alternative Tooling Technologies research group encompasses concepts such as 24-hour tools, transformer tools, and wood-based tools. Through generative tool manufacturing, rapid tooling, and sensor- and actuator-based tools, we strive for advanced and environmentally conscious forming technology.

Across all research groups, the focus within the framework of scalable manufacturing systems is on networked processes, Industry 4.0, increased flexibility, and digitalization. Our work aims to develop scalable and flexible manufacturing techniques characterized by intelligent process integration, artificial intelligence, and state-of-the-art digital technologies.

Additive Manufacturing of Polymeric Pressure Die For Rotary Draw Bending Process

-

Control of the forming zone by varying the surface pressure in the clamping surfaces during incremental swing bending

As part of the DFG project, researchers are investigating how the forming zone during incremental swing bending can be influenced by segmenting the clamping surfaces. Dynamically controllable die segments are intended to specifically influence the strain distribution in the forming zone and make better use of the local formability.

Extending the Process Limits of Conventional Rotational Draw Bending Through the Implementation of an Incremental Bending Feature (iRDB)

An incremental bending feature expands the kinematics of rotational draw bending, increases its flexibility, and enables the cost-effective production of large bending radii.
