Orange Day | International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls
Orange Day - the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls on 25 November - uses the color orange to send a visible signal against gender-based violence and for solidarity. Every year, the Department for Equal Opportunities informs and engages in a variety of activities to mark the occasion.

To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the University of Siegen hosted the online reading "When the last woman leaves the room" with author and HeForShe ambassador Vincent-Immanuel Herr. He read selected passages from the book he co-authored with Martin Speer and provided insights into male perspectives on equality, sexism, gendering and quotas. Almost 60 people took part in the digital event and used the opportunity to talk to the author.
The event was organized by the Equal Opportunities Office of the University of Siegen, the Diversity Policies Officer, the Women Career Service, the mentoring program FraMeS - Women's Specific Mentoring Siegen, Gestu_S, POLIS, the CRC "Media of Cooperation", the CRC "Transformations of the Popular" and the Research Training Group "Consequences of Social Aids". Furthermore, the AStA organized a joint screening of the online reading.
On 25 November 2024, psychologist and science communicator Franziska Saxler read from her book "'He didn't even touch you' - Sexualized harassment and abuse of power at work - and how we can protect ourselves from it" as part of an online event at the University of Siegen.
In her book, Saxler sheds light on the structures of sexualized harassment and abuse of power in the workplace. The book arose from her deep commitment to justice and respect in the workplace and is based on years of research, intensive debate and numerous conversations.
The well-attended reading not only offered valuable insights into current research, but also made an important contribution to education and awareness-raising. The event was organized by the Equal Opportunities Office and the Diversity Policies Officer at the University of Siegen.
On November 27, 2023, a lecture and discussion with urban researcher Dr. Mary Dellenbaugh-Losse took place at the University of Siegen to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The focus was on questions of a just and safe urban design that enables participation and safety for all people - especially women, families and queer people. In her lecture, Dr. Dellenbaugh-Losse provided valuable insights into the topics of gender planning, social inclusion and citizen participation. The subsequent panel discussion with representatives from the University of Siegen and the City of Siegen provided space for lively discussions and practical perspectives.
On November 24, 2022, the student representative of the Equal Opportunities Officer, together with colleagues from the Equal Opportunities Office, drew attention to the International Day against Violence against Women and Girls at an information stand in the Mensa foyer on Campus AR. Equipped with information material, the team was available to answer questions and offered insights into contact points and organizations that provide advice and support in emergency situations. Interested members of the university were also able to find out about the tasks and structures of the Equal Opportunities Office.
On Thursday, November 25, 2021, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the online lecture "The Political Masculinity of Incels" by Dr.' Susanne Kaiser took place. In her lecture, the author and journalist shed light on the ideological background of the so-called "incels" and their connection to globally strengthening authoritarian and anti-feminist movements. The event offered participants fascinating insights into current socio-political developments. The event was organized by the Equal Opportunities Office in cooperation with Gestu_S, the AStA and the Diversity Policies Officer of the University of Siegen. The evening was met with great interest and encouraged further discussion about gender roles and political concepts of masculinity.
To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, the team from the Gender Equality Office created a digital pinboard in 2020. In addition to information on the day of action and remembrance, it also contained valuable information on advice and support services. The offer was supplemented by a wide range of recommendations from literature, culture and media - from art exhibitions, books and films to inspiring podcasts.
To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls 2019, the team from the Equal Opportunities Office and the AStA organized an information stand in the foyer of the Haardter Berg School on the Adolf Reichwein Campus of the University of Siegen. Interested members of the university were able to find out about offers of help - and show their solidarity at the same time: Home-baked waffles were available for a donation to the Siegen association "Frauen helfen Frauen e.V.".
