Research activities

Dominik Schieder obtained his PhD at the University of Bayreuth. He specializes in the anthropology of Fiji. His research interests include transnational Fiji Islander mobility and migration, diaspora-building processes, sociality, politics and sport. He has conducted field and archival research in Fiji, Japan, the United Kingdom, India and Australia. He is a research associate (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) and the scientific coordinator of the Research Unit ‘Transborder Mobility and Institutional Dynamics’ (transMID, FOR5183) which is funded by German Research Foundation (2021 to 2026). He is based in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Siegen. Before joining the University of Siegen, he held postdoctoral positions at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan, and the Frobenius Institute at Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, and he has been a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He currently serves on the board of the European Society for Oceanists (ESFO) and he has previously been a co-speaker of the Oceania Working Group of the German Association of Social and Cultural Anthropology (GASCA). He is currently also involved in the CNRS International Research Network ‘Habitability of Pacific Environments’ (HOPE).
