Vita
Marco Fries studied Business Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Siegen. His work is situated at the intersection of technical system development, human-centered design, and organizational practice. This perspective is shaped not only by his academic career, but also by several years of professional experience in software development, consulting, and project management. As a result, he combines research perspectives with a strong understanding of operational processes and the specific conditions under which digital technologies are implemented in organizations.
Since 2021, Marco Fries has been working in research and transfer projects focusing on artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and human-centered systems design. After positions at the University of Siegen and FernUniversität in Hagen, he returned to the University of Siegen in April 2026, where he is now a research associate at the Chair of Human-Centered Information Systems.
His main areas of interest include generative AI, machine learning, knowledge management, and explainable as well as context-sensitive AI systems. He is particularly concerned with production-related processes and the question of how AI models and digital tools can be meaningfully integrated into operational work contexts. In research transfer and consulting projects, including the Zukunftszentrum KI NRW, he develops and evaluates AI applications together with companies for specific practical challenges — ranging from the identification of suitable use cases to the prototypical development and evaluation of models and systems.
At the core of his work is the question of how AI can be designed not only to be technically powerful, but also understandable, relevant, and genuinely useful for people in their everyday work.
