Person

Sophia Bauer is an artist. In her art- and research-based practice, she has been working with sound as a central medium for several years. She understands sound not only as a material, but also as a space for insight and thought. It is both the subject of her research and her research method. Through sound-based, performative, and installation-based formats, she explores how ideological, political, and social power structures shape perception, knowledge, and community—and how practices of listening and sound-making can open up alternative perspectives.

Sophia Bauer studied African languages, literature, and art at the University of Bayreuth (BA) before enrolling at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, where she graduated in 2019 with a diploma with honors in the field of sound. Since then, she has been working as a freelance artist. She is a co-founder of the Sound Of Nairobi sound archive. Her works have been exhibited in international contexts, including at the Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg, munyu Art Space in Nairobi, the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi, Temporary Gallery in Cologne, LTK 4 – Sound-Based Arts in Cologne, the Saarländisches Künstlerhaus, and the NCAI in Nairobi.
