Formalities
The Master's thesis is written and submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. This also applies to theses by students who have chosen a topic from the subject of Business Management and Media Management. Supervision by a reviewer from Schools III can be listed on the title page.

Processing period
You have 18 or 26 weeks (for empirical theses) to complete your thesis if you are studying full-time. After 2/3 of the processing time, you may hand in your thesis early.

Illness
If you fall ill during the writing period, please contact the Examinations Office with your medical certificate. We cannot request medical certificates from the health insurance company.
Withdrawal
You can withdraw from the Master's thesis at the Examinations Office up to 1 week before the start of the writing periodwithout giving reasons.
You can only return your topic once and only within 1 week of the start of the processing period.
You can also withdraw from the Master's thesis during the writing periodfor valid reasons. The written request must be submitted to the Examinations Office at least one day before the deadline, together with supporting documents (e.g. certificate). If the Examination Board recognizes these reasons, the Master's thesis is deemed not to have been undertaken.
Length
As a rule, the Master's thesis should not exceed 80 pages (excluding lists and appendices) or a total of around 30,000 words. A larger deviation in the scope (more than +/- 10%) can be included in the assessment by the examiners.
Declaration of plagiarism
Include the following signed declaration of plagiarism in the PDF and the printed copies of your Master's thesis:
"I declare that I have prepared the written thesis independently and have not used any aids other than those specified. I have clearly identified all passages that are taken from other works in terms of wording or meaning (including translations) as borrowed material in each individual case, stating the exact source (including the World Wide Web and other electronic data collections). This also applies to attached drawings, pictorial representations, sketches and the like. In particular, I assure you that I have identified as such all literal and analogous borrowings from other works as well as the use of AI-based text generators. I acknowledge that the proven omission of the indication of origin will be regarded as attempted deception."
Submission of the Master's thesis
Submission
Send your Master's thesis as a PDF by email to the Examinations Office by the submission date at the latest. Remember the signed declaration of plagiarism. Also submit 2 bound printed copies (no spiral or saddle stitching). You can submit the copies in person at the Examinations Office, drop them in the post or send them by post. The decisive factor for submission is the receipt of the PDF at the Examinations Office. We will forward your Master's thesis to the reviewers.
If you would like to provide your reviewers with additional data (e.g. for empirical work), please add a separate data carrier (e.g. USB stick).
Reviews
As a rule, the reviewers prepare the reviews within 6 or 8 weeks (depending on the PO). If it takes longer, you are welcome to ask. However, it is not unusual for reviewers to overrun the deadline.
After the result has been announced, you can request to see the reports.
Colloquium IMuG
The colloquium usually takes place as a group event six weeks after the start of the Master's thesis processing period. You present the theses of your Master's thesis to an interdisciplinary audience.
You are obliged to attend the interdisciplinary examination colloquium for at least two days. Attendance is compulsory for the examination colloquium of those who have started their Master's thesis on the same date. You should also attend the previous semester's examination colloquium so that you get an impression of the expected performance and can better prepare for your own colloquium.
Course
You can attend the "Jour fixe" under 1MEWI3523V. The event provides basic information about the Master's examination and helps you to find a topic by teaching you working techniques. In addition, the concepts for the participants' Master's theses are presented and discussed, most recently in an event open to the public with an interdisciplinary committee made up of representatives from all subjects involved in the degree program.
