Pregnancy and maternity protection

Since 01.01.2018, the Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG) has also expressly applied to female students!

This means that if you are pregnant during your studies, you are under the special protection of this law. You have the opportunity to officially report your pregnancy to the University of Siegen and thus take advantage of the statutory maternity protection periods.

However, notification does not automatically mean that you have to interrupt your studies. If you wish, you can continue to study during the protection periods and continue your studies as planned.

Notification of pregnancy

When you report your pregnancy, the Occupational Health and Safety Department will carry out a risk assessment. This will check whether there are any potential risks for you or your child in terms of premises, working hours, study locations, materials, etc. If necessary, appropriate protective measures can be taken.

The notification is made using a notification form and a risk assessment form. You will also find an overview of all important information and contact persons on the University of Siegen's maternity protection information sheet.

Maternity protection primarily serves to protect your health and that of your child. If measures are necessary that may temporarily restrict or delay your studies, the university should compensate for possible disadvantages.

Advice during pregnancy

The Family Service Office at the University of Siegen offers advice on questions about studying during pregnancy, maternity protection periods, organizing your studies with a child and individual support options.

In addition, regional pregnancy counseling centers provide confidential advice on all questions relating to pregnancy and parenthood.

The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth also offers confidential advice on the subject of pregnancy.
