Project description
Moments of impaired control describe behaviors that are performed despite contrary intentions. Gaming Disorder (GD) and Pornography-Use Disorder (PUD) are considered clinically relevant and share the characteristic of impaired control, although they are classified differently in ICD-11. So far, this control has mostly been studied retrospectively and via self-reports - actual behavioral patterns and underlying mechanisms in natural settings are largely unknown.
According to theories, self-control and self-regulatory mechanisms play a central role, although their effect varies depending on the stage of the illness. Self-control is influenced by factors such as cue reactivity, craving, approach tendencies and inhibitory control. Self-regulation - such as intrinsic motivation, behavioral control strategies and permissive beliefs - should also be considered.
There is a lack of studies that record these mechanisms in everyday situations and contribute to the prediction of loss of control. Such knowledge is essential in order to identify at-risk individuals at an early stage and develop effective prevention and intervention measures.
The project is therefore investigating
-
typical behavioral patterns of impaired control in GD and PUD,
-
underlying psychological mechanisms,
-
their prognostic significance for future loss of control in everyday life.
