Pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Law
A doctoral degree is an important additional qualification, but also a form of self-fulfillment. It is a prerequisite for an academic career. Above all, it is a key building block for securing top management positions and is highly regarded by clients of consulting firms. It attests to the ability to work persistently toward strategic goals and demonstrates a high level of methodological competence, enabling one to tackle even the most difficult and novel problems.
Due to the dual qualifications of business lawyers, it is possible to earn both a doctoral degree in law (Dr. iur.) and a doctoral degree in economics (Dr. rer. pol.).
A doctoral degree can be pursued with either a master’s degree in German and European Economic Law or another master’s program leading to the academic degree of LL.M. In addition, passing the First or Second State Examination in Law also qualifies you to pursue a doctoral degree.
You can find the exact requirements, as well as any additional ones, in the doctoral regulations. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our academic advisors.
As of February 8, 2021, the doctoral regulations for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Economic Sciences (Dr. rer. pol.) and Doctor of Law (Dr. iur.) have been amended and are now in effect.
All doctoral candidates enrolled under the old regulations may continue their doctoral studies under those regulations. Transition periods are in effect. New enrollments are now only possible under the new regulations!
You can find the most current versions of the doctoral regulations for the Dr. rer. pol. and Dr. iur. degrees on the Faculty III website.
