Recognition of Coursework
The question of whether previously earned academic credits can be transferred is addressed only after enrollment in the DEWR bachelor’s or master’s program, upon submission of a corresponding request to the relevant department representative. Further information on the procedure can be found on theExaminations Office website. If you are unable to have any course credits recognized, you must generally take all required exams.
To this end, we recommend first familiarizing yourself with the relevant modules by consulting the program’s examination regulations. You should then create a table comparing the respective modules or submodules with the (potentially) equivalent course credits you have already earned. However, it is important to note that credit cannot be granted for submodules alone. Equivalent course credits must be available for all submodules of a given module in order for credit to be granted.
For example: The module “Public Economic Law I” comprises the submodules Constitutional Law, European Law, and the Public Economic Law I seminar (AG ÖWR I).
If, for example, you can only provide equivalent course work in Constitutional Law (State Law I and II) but not in European Law, credit cannot be granted. Credit can only be granted for Constitutional Law (as a submodule) because these modules conclude with a single final exam and grade.
The decision regarding equivalence and credit for course work can only be made by the respective subject representative (examiner; you can find this information on the application form) upon request after enrollment.
Yes, in this regard, you should first contact theExaminations Office of School III
.
After passing the first state law exam (Erster Prüfung), you can be admitted to the master’s program in Siegen. Additional proof of business qualifications is not required. However, you should already have a solid foundation in business administration or economics, or be willing to acquire this knowledge on your own through dedicated effort, in order to be able to follow the relevant course material in the master’s program.
- First, you must send an overview of the study plan for your degree program, a current transcript of grades, and a certificate of enrollment indicating your current academic semester to the Examinations Office of School III, requesting that they review whether you can be placed into a higher academic semester.
- You will then, if applicable, receive a placement certificate for a higher academic semester. With this certificate, you should contact theStudent Affairs Office
and apply for admission to the corresponding academic semester. - Regardless of whether you are placed in a higher semester, academic credits you have already earned will be recognized.
If exams worth 15 credit points (LP) or more are recognized, one academic semester is generally credited (for 45 LP or more, 2 semesters are credited; for 75 LP, 3 semesters, and so on). This also applies if the student was on leave of absence during the period in which the recognized coursework was completed and, as a result, the academic semesters were not initially counted toward the student’s study period. However, no additional study periods are recognized if the student was regularly enrolled in the degree program in which the credits were applied during the period in which the recognized coursework was completed.
Example 1:
A student is enrolled in the 4th academic semester in the Summer Semester 2017 and takes a leave of absence (at the Student Affairs Office) for the Winter Semester 2017/18 to study abroad, which initially freezes the number of academic semesters, so that the student remains in the 4th academic semester during the 2017/18 winter semester. After re-registering for the 2018 summer semester, the student is initially automatically placed in the 5th academic semester.
The student then submits an application for the recognition of academic achievements, whereupon exams from her studies abroad totaling 27 LP are recognized. The student thus completed a significant amount of exam-relevant coursework for her degree program at the University of Siegen during the 2017/18 winter semester, which was also credited; therefore, the 2017/18 winter semester counts as part of the student’s program duration, and for the 2018 summer semester, the student is advanced to the 6th semester. Such an advancement can also be applied retroactively.
Example 2:
Same as Example 1, except that the student did not take a leave of absence for the 2017/18 winter semester.
In this case, the student is enrolled in the 5th academic semester during the 2017/18 winter semester and in the 6th academic semester during the 2017 summer semester. No reclassification takes place after recognition, since the student was regularly enrolled at the University of Siegen when she completed the coursework relevant to the examination.
Example 3:
Same as Example 1 (the student took a leave of absence), but only 10 LP (instead of 27 LP) worth of exams are credited.
In this case, the student remains enrolled in the 5th semester in the Summer Semester 2017. No reclassification to a higher semester will occur following recognition, as the scope of the credited coursework was insignificant (within the meaning of the regulation). The decisive factor here is the number of credit points credited, not the number of credit points earned at the external institution.
