DNS and NTP

The ZIMT provides central servers for DNS (resolving domain names) and NTP (timing via the network).

DNS

The Domain Name Service or Domain Name System (DNS) is a service that makes it possible to manage the names of computers in a network. This means that it is no longer necessary to know the IP address of a computer with which data is to be exchanged. Instead, a name can be used for this computer. The namespace assigned to the University of Siegen is uni-siegen.de

In case of questions and/or problems, an e-mail can be sent to the postmaster of the corresponding area, which is the following address for the ZIMT:

DNSAnsprechpartner@uni-siegen.de

The ZIMT currently operates two "official" domain name servers for the administration of the Internet namespace of the University of Siegen. They can be reached via the following IP addresses:

  • 141.99.2.2
  • 141.99.1.12

NTP

The ZIMT provides time servers with the names

  • ntp1.uni-siegen.de
  • ntp2.uni-siegen.de

which offer coordinated universal time (UTC) for time synchronization of workstations and servers of the university. The above time servers can be used, for example, via the Network Time Protocol (NTP), which then represent Stratum 2 servers. They can also be used by workstations that are not in continuous operation (e.g. when switched off at night) using the SNTP protocol for time adjustment.
