Description
The ZIMT manages the university's inner network (LAN) and the external connections (WAN) both to the Internet provider of the German Research Network (DFN) and to the Deutsche Telekom.
Network sockets are initially not patched, i.e. although cables are connected to the technical rooms, these cables are not connected to the active network components (switches). Patching only takes place when the socket is needed, which is known as "on-demand patching". In practice, this leads to considerable savings in active network components, which saves expensive hardware and energy.
Network connections are part of virtual networks, each with their own address space. The ZIMT maintains a list of network admins responsible for each VLAN who have to agree in case a socket is added to their VLAN.
Application
Patching a network socket into a VLAN can be requested via our support desk. Please state the complete socket designation and the desired VLAN. You should get permission in advance from the VLAN's network admin. Please include them in the communication (CC via e-mail).
