Symposium "Transformative Economics" - Perspectives for a future-oriented economic science
Research project
Almost two decades after the global financial crisis, the plural economics movement is at a crossroads. As pure criticism of the economic mainstream has faded into the background in social debates, plural economics is needed more urgently than ever to provide answers to crises such as climate change, social inequality and digitalization. The three-day symposium at the Xplanatorium Schloss Herrenhausen in Hanover is dedicated to the central question of whether we need transformative economics, how it should be designed and how it relates to plural economics. Organized by the Plural Economics group at the University of Siegen and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, the event offers a structured space for the future of teaching and research. In five consecutive discussion rounds, the participants will discuss which focal points and schools of theory are constitutive for a transformative science, how cooperation with other social sciences and humanities can succeed and how the tension between scientific integrity and social commitment should be assessed. The symposium will also address controversies surrounding post-growth approaches and finally serve to initiate joint publications and long-term networking activities in order to consolidate cooperation within plural economic science in the long term.
