Ways to finance your doctorate:
Although universities in Germany do not charge tuition fees, you still need to be able to cover your living costs for the 3-5 years of your doctoral studies. Therefore, financing your stay is an important issue to address before you come to Germany.
One way to finance your doctorate is through a scholarship. Although these are usually limited to a fairly short period of time, they generally cover a good part of your doctoral studies. There are a number of options:
" Funding opportunities at the University of Siegen can be found on the website of the House of Young Talents Young Academy.
" The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) also offers a range of scholarship programs
" The EURAXESS Germany portal offers information for internationally active researchers and is part of an EU-wide network. It includes a funding database that provides information on funding programs programs and a job portal. There is also a lot of information about living and working in Germany.
" The website of Research in Germany also offers an overview of various scholarship databases and funding opportunities.
This list does not claim to be exhaustive, which is why you will also find many other funding opportunities online.
It is quite common for a doctorate to be financed via an employment contract in the new department. This can be between approx. 20 and 40 hours per week and is usually limited to a few years. Please check the university's job portal of the university to see if there are any vacancies.
A job at the university is of course ideal, but you can also finance your stay through another job. Please note, however, that the number of hours you work and the type of job will affect your residence permit. For many jobs in the region, you will also need a good knowledge of German.
