European Digital Innovation Hub South Westphalia (EDIH SWF)
Motivation
Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as public sector organizations face the challenge of integrating new digital technologies – particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) – into their existing processes. In many cases, the necessary technical expertise, resources, or suitable testing environments are lacking. At the same time, digital transformation requires new skills within the workforce and stronger connections to European innovation ecosystems.
Objectives & Methodology
To address these challenges, the European Commission established the European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) as “one-stop shops” within the Digital Europe Programme. They serve as a first point of contact for SMEs and public sector organizations seeking support with their digital transformation initiatives. The EDIH network consists of more than 250 hubs across all 27 Member States of the European Union and associated countries. Most hubs focus on a specific region or technological domain.
The EDIH SWF has been supporting various stakeholders in practically testing and successfully implementing digital technologies since November 1, 2022. On January 1, 2026, the well-established project entered its second phase. Based on a human-centered, socio-technical approach, the hub offers a range of services, including “Test before Invest”, “Skills and Training”, “Access to Funding”, and Access to European Innovation Ecosystems. In this way, technological innovation is closely linked with organizational development and workforce upskilling.
Expected Impact & Transfer
The project strengthens the digital competitiveness of the regional economy and facilitates access to the European AI ecosystem. Through collaboration with other EDIHs, Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs), and AI Factories, companies and public sector organizations can access technological expertise, testing infrastructures, and innovation partners across borders. In addition, EDIH SWF contributes to expanding digital skills in the region through demonstrations, training programs, and advisory services, thereby supporting the establishment of sustainable innovation processes.
