Degree program
Starting in the 2021/2022 winter semester, students will be able to enroll for the first time in the specialized program in Economics for teaching at secondary schools (HRSGe) as well as for teaching at high schools and comprehensive schools (GymGe) at the University of Siegen.
The Economics extension program provides students with in-depth subject-specific and pedagogical expertise in the field of economic education, as well as the ability to apply this knowledge in a manner tailored to specific school types. Key topics include the social market economy, economic policy, sustainability, consumer education, economic research methods, and practical implementation in the classroom.
Both students and already qualified teachers are thus given the opportunity to acquire an additional, third teaching certification in Economics in conjunction with an undergraduate teacher education program. This improves future career prospects for prospective teachers and offers qualified teachers an additional qualification in the field of economic education.
Further information can be found in the examination regulations for the extension program in teacher education for the subject of economics.
Presentation for the information session (February 2026).
The current enrollment/transfer window for the program is from January 5 to March 20, 2026 (-> Student Affairs Office)
The Economics Extension Program is open to all students
-
who are enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program in teacher education for Hauptschulen, Realschulen, Sekundarschulen, and Gesamtschulen, or Gymnasien and Gesamtschulen at the University of Siegen,
-
who have already completed a teacher education program leading to a “Master of Education” degree for Haupt-, Real-, Sekundar-, and Gesamtschulen or Gymnasien and Gesamtschulen, or
-
have completed the first or second state examination in teacher education for the corresponding school type.
Upon successful completion of the Economics Specialization Program, graduates receive a certificate of completion for the specialization examination. This certificate confirms that the graduates have met the academic requirements for obtaining an additional teaching certification in Economics in accordance with § 16 of the Bavarian Teaching Qualifications Act (LABG). The certificate of the supplementary examination is valid only in conjunction with the certificate of the Master’s examination or the First State Examination in Teacher Education. The supplementary program in Economics therefore does not replace the study of a subject in the undergraduate Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Teacher Education.
The program can be started in either the summer or winter semester. Written applications should be sent to the Office of the Registrar at the University of Siegen. All necessary forms for transfer or enrollment, as well as the relevant contact information, can be found on the Office of the Registrar’s website.
