Early-Career Research Group: Women in Focus

Rethinking the History of Mathematics and Physics

Project Description

The early-career research group aims to investigate and highlight the contributions of women to the history and philosophy of mathematics and physics, which are often still underrepresented.

Examining the role of women in the history of science and culture is long overdue. Particularly in the history and philosophy of mathematics and physics, this can contribute to a more equitable and appropriate representation of genders and help shape these fields to be more diverse and open in the future.

We focus primarily on historical case studies to elucidate the multifaceted connections between the construction of knowledge, scientific research practices, and the surrounding social and political contexts. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are employed in this process.

However, the results not only contribute to a more modern representation of all genders in the sciences but also help to shed deeper light on the underlying scientific issues. The group’s focus is on the late 19th and early 20th centuries—a period particularly marked by philosophy’s efforts to (re)position and legitimize itself within the natural sciences.
