Welcome to the Chair of Communication Engineering at the University of Siegen

At the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (Faculty IV), wedevelop and investigate sustainable and energy-efficient solutions for wirelesscommunication and sensor systems. Our research aims to enable environmentally friendly, resource-efficient, and future-oriented technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT) and industrial digitalization.

The Chair of Communication Engineering at the University of Siegen focuses on researchand teaching in sustainable and energy-efficient wireless communication and sensorsystems.
Our work addresses the technological challenges of digital transformation in industry and society, ranging from energy-efficient data transmission to resource-saving integration ofIoT systems.

Our research combines fundamental studies with applied approaches in areas such asbackscatter communication, near-field communication (NFC), wireless power transfer, and RF energy harvesting. The overarching goal is to develop innovative solutions for a sustainable and connected future.

Research Profile

The research at the Chair of Communication Engineering is organizedinto two main areas:

  1. Energy-Efficient Wireless Communication and Sensor Systems
    This area focuses on sustainable concepts for future wirelesssystems, including backscatter communication, near-fieldcommunication (NFC), wireless power transfer, and RF energyharvesting to realize batteryless and autonomous IoT and industrialsensor nodes.
  2. Integrated Radio Frequency Circuits for Ultra-Low Power Applications
    Research in this area targets the design of highly integrated RF and microwave circuits for energy-efficient applications, includingminiaturized antennas, transponders, and adaptive circuitarchitectures enabling sustainable communication technologies.

  • Backscatter communication and passive RFID systems for realizingextremely energy-efficient, batteryless sensors
  • Near-field communication (NFC) and wireless sensornetworks enabling high-performance, sustainable IoT applications
  • Wireless power transfer (WPT) for contactless energy transmission in sensor nodes
  • RF energy harvesting to achieve autonomous power supply for IoT devices
  • Highly optimized analog frontends for (ultra-)low-power wirelesscommunication and energy harvesting devices
  • Miniaturized antenna and transponder technologies to optimizepassive and semi-passive sensor nodes
  • System-on-a-chip and system-in-package solutions to realize highlyintegrated communication systems with reduced material usage
