Authentication systems

Authentication systems

Authentication systems are crucial for the security and management of access rights in modern IT infrastructures.

Authentication systems are essential security mechanisms that ensure that only authorized users have access to certain systems and data. These systems verify the identity of a user and allow or deny access based on predefined criteria.

ZIMT uses two central authentication platforms for this purpose, which handle logins as transparently as possible. These login services cannot be booked by users and are integrated into the login process depending on the service to be accessed:

Shibboleth

Shibboleth is an open source framework for single sign-on (SSO) and federated identity management that is commonly used in academic and research environments. It allows users to log in once and access different resources hosted by different organizations.

The user authenticates themselves with the so-called Identity Provider (IdP) of their home organization (= University of Siegen) and thus gains access to services at the respective service provider.

The ZIMT ID and the corresponding password (ZIMT account) are required to log in via this system.

Citrix ADC

Citrix ADC (Application Delivery Controller), formerly Citrix NetScaler, is a network appliance that offers a wide range of functions for application provisioning and security. These include load balancing, application acceleration and authentication services.

The NetScaler can also act as an SSO solution to centralize and secure access to various applications and services.

The ZIMT account data (user ID and password) is required to log in via this system.
