The problematic use of social networks as a form of addiction-like behavior is the subject of intense debate in both society and academia. This presentation addresses this issue against the backdrop of theoretical models and empirical evidence, with a focus on cognitive and affective mechanisms. It highlights commonalities with other addiction-like behaviors, such as gaming disorder, while also emphasizing distinct characteristics of social media use. An outlook for empirical research and further discourse is provided.
