Language Brings People Together: Cooperative Communicative Practices in Media Societies
The conference will focus on all types of linguistic and communicative media practices (in the broadest sense) through which actors—acting in ways that are (more or less) appropriate to the situation—work toward facilitating cooperation and/or sustainably promoting social cohesion, or counteract the production of categories of social difference.
About the Conference
A conference, too, represents a unique form of cooperative communication. This becomes particularly evident when the event is not merely an academic conference.
We have organized this conference to mark Stephan Habscheid’s 60th birthday, and we are very much looking forward to engaging in in-depth discussions with the speakers and all conference participants on specific—and, in our view, highly relevant—aspects of cooperative communicative practices.
Key Questions of the Conference:
- What interactional, linguistic, and communicative (media) practices—which aim to facilitate cooperation and sustainably strengthen social cohesion (or can be interpreted as such)—can be found in various fields of application?
- How is the production of social categories of difference counteracted linguistically, and how are these categories addressed discursively and/or interactionally?
- In a world saturated with media, is it even possible to distinguish between media-mediated and non-mediated interactions? What linguistic patterns and specific features can be identified?
