Financial Support for Students with Family Responsibilities

Studying while caring for a family requires organizational skills and perseverance, and often presents a financial challenge as well. Whether it’s childcare, pregnancy, or caring for family members—family responsibilities frequently entail additional burdens, especially in situations where finances are tight.

The University of Siegen provides targeted support to students with family responsibilities through two funding programs:

  • the Family Scholarship —to provide support during the final phase of studies

  • the Family Emergency Assistance Fund —to help bridge acute financial emergencies

Both programs help prevent students from dropping out of school for financial reasons and promote equal opportunity.

Family Scholarship

The University of Siegen’s Family Scholarship supports students with family responsibilities who are facing financial difficulties as they work toward their degree. The goal of the scholarship is to make it easier to balance academic studies with family life and to provide financial relief to students during a particularly challenging phase of their lives. 

The grant is awarded as a monthly payment for the duration of one semester.

 

Who is eligible?

Eligible applicants are students enrolled at the University of Siegen who: 

  • care for and support at least one child in their own household, are pregnant, and/or care for and support a family member in need of care,
  • are in the final semester of their degree program,
  • are writing their thesis or can demonstrate a comparable workload required for graduation, and
  • are in a difficult financial situation due to these circumstances.

Application Deadlines 

The application deadlines are as follows: 

  • March 1 ( summer semester)
  • September 1 (winter semester)
  • In the event of pregnancy or a sudden need to provide care, an application may also be submitted outside the regular deadlines!

Family Emergency Assistance Fund

The Family Emergency Assistance Fund is intended for students at the University of Siegen who have family responsibilities and are facing an acute financial emergency. The fund’s goal is to help students bridge short-term financial difficulties and enable them to continue their studies despite stressful circumstances. 

Support is typically provided in the form of a one-time financial grant.

 

Who is eligible to apply?

Eligible applicants are enrolled students at the University of Siegen who

  • care for and support at least one child in their own household, are pregnant, and/or care for and support a family member in need of long-term care, and
  • are in a verifiable financial emergency.
