FAQ topic area A) Before the Master's program: Questions about application / admission / enrollment for the Master's program in Social Work

You can apply via the unisono portal. To apply, please create an applicant account in the first step here
to create an applicant account. You will receive your access data for the application portal at the e-mail address you provided during the registration process. In the second step, you will find the Master's degree program in Social Work under "Online application", for which you can then apply. Please note that it is no longer possible to apply for the old study model "Master's degree program in Education and Social Work".

Applications for the Master's degree program in Social Work for the winter semester 2025/26 were possible from May 12 to September 30, 2025 via the unisono application portal of the University of Siegen. Please note that an application is only possible for the new study model "Master's degree program in Social Work".

If you have one of the degrees entitling you to admission (e.g. Bachelor of Arts in Social Work/Social Work/Educational Science/Social Pedagogy) or a comparable degree, have graduated with a grade of at least "good" (2.5) and have applied by the deadline, admission will be granted promptly by the Examination Office. All applicants who meet the above conditions will be admitted. In case of doubt, the examination board will decide. If you do not yet have your degree certificate, you will be admitted with reservations. You must submit it by the deadline set by the examination board. Otherwise your provisional admission will expire.

Even if you have another degree in educational science or a Bachelor's degree in social work (e.g. Bachelor's degree in Childhood Education, Bachelor's degree in Rehabilitation Education, Bachelor's degree in Social Management) and the required grade (at least 2.5), you can still apply for a Master's place. It is likely that the above-mentioned degrees are comparable with the degrees entitling you to admission. If you have a degree other than one of the above (e.g. a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or Sociology), it is less likely that it will be comparable with the degrees qualifying for admission. You can still apply, but comparability can only be checked as part of the admission procedure (i.e. after you have applied).

The enrollment deadline is communicated in the written notification of admission from the Examination Board.

You can find information on the homepage and in this FAQ list. You can also subscribe to the e-mail distribution list for prospective Master's students. In May, June and July of each year, information events on the Master's program take place, to which you will be invited. Registration

The information events take place from May to July of each year - as face-to-face or online events. You can find the exact dates for these events in unisono
under "Search for events" -> enter "search term": 2EP100208V. If you are enrolled at the University of Siegen (also in another degree program), please register in unisono
for one of the courses (groups). If you are not (yet) enrolled, please register by e-mail ( to michael.mayerle@uni-siegen.de).

Study and examination achievements in another Master's degree program at the University of Siegen or another university can be credited if they are equivalent. Please send the completed application for recognition of study and examination achievements
with the required documents to Ms. Katharina Morez at the Examination Office for Social Work.

Yes, during the final phase of your BASA or BAStEI studies, you can already complete coursework (not examinations) for the Master's degree program in Social Work - provided there are seminar places available. This can be useful if you want to bridge the time until the start of the Master's program. The prerequisite is that you have already completed 140 credit points in the aforementioned Bachelor's degree program and that you are enrolled at the time the coursework is completed. In this case, it is not possible to register for the coursework via unisono. Please register for the course via e-mail to the Examinations Office during the registration period. Please use the transcript of records (Schein) to confirm that you have completed the course. You can have the course credited by the Examinations Office after enrolling in the Master's degree program in Social Work. Attending the introductory seminar (Master's module 1, 1 CP) is recommended before acquiring further credits for the Master's degree.

Yes, the provision of credits always requires formal enrolment. If you have already completed the degree program that qualifies you for admission to the Master's degree program, you can also be enrolled in another degree program that does not require admission in order to complete credits for the Master's degree program in Social Work, according to the decision of the Examination Board.

Admission to the Master's degree course in Social Work is possible once a year, in the winter semester. To do so, you must have successfully completed the BASA or BAStEI Bachelor's degree in the summer semester before the start of the course. If you do not finish in time, it may make sense to complete coursework for the Master's degree in advance to bridge the gap until the next semester. To do this, you must be enrolled in BASA or BAStEI and have already earned 140 credit points in the Bachelor's degree program. If you have already completed the degree program that qualifies you for admission to the Master's degree program, you can also be enrolled in another, admission-free degree program in order to complete coursework for the Master's degree program in Social Work, according to the decision of the Examination Board. In this case, it is not possible to register for the course via unisono. Please register for the course via e-mail to the Examination Office during the registration period. Please use the transcript of records (Schein) to confirm that you have completed the course. Once you have enrolled on the Master's degree program, you can have the coursework you have completed in advance credited towards the Master's degree. Attending the introductory seminar (Master's module 1, 1 CP) is recommended before acquiring further credits for the Master's degree.

No, this is not possible, not even through the provision of additional work. State recognition is not awarded in conjunction with the Master's degree program in Education and Social Work. State recognition is associated with certain Bachelor's degrees (e.g. Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Siegen) and can generally only be obtained at the university where you completed your Bachelor's degree. State-specific regulations apply, e.g. the Social Professions Recognition Act NRW (SoBAG).
