The Bachelor's and Master's thesis can be completed in the subject of music in the areas of musicology, music education or music theory.

Musicology (contact persons: Prof. Dr. Florian Heesch, Prof. Dr. Evelyn Buyken)

Students can generate questions on a musicological topic and work on them using the tools of historical musicology. The work documents the research on musicological questions. They are able to present a musicological discourse based on the research question.

Music education(contact persons: Prof. Dr. Bernd Clausen, Dr. Thorsten Wagner)

Students can generate questions on a music education topic and work on them using the tools of historical and systematic music education. The work documents the research on music education issues. They are able to present a music education discourse based on the question derived from research or concrete lesson observation and relate it to teaching practice.

Music theory(contact persons: Prof. Martin Herchenröder, Prof. Dr. Lawrence Wilde)

Based on musical works, students can recognize, analyze and describe compositional principles. They can reflect on and comment on questions and results against the background of existing research literature. Students will be able to put compositional principles and processes into practice.

Please discuss your topic with the lecturers. In order to be able to register for the Master's thesis, you must have achieved at least 60 credit points (CP) throughout your studies. Please also take into account any credits from your degree program that have not yet been transferred to unisono; these will be credited by the Examinations Office. It is recommended that you complete the practical semester before working on your Master's thesis. Further information on the Bachelor's and Master's theses can be found on the ZLB homepage.

The practical examination usually takes place towards the end of the lecture period and towards the end of the lecture-free period (in the BA this is necessary so that the BA certificate can be issued in good time, which you need for registration and enrolment for the Master's degree). The dates for the major and minor instruments are organized separately, but the relevant examinations may well take place on the same day.

Please register in writing for the practical examination at the Music Department office in accordance with the deadlines. The practical examination must also be registered as an examination performance at unisono.

During the five-month practical semester, MA students are given the opportunity to participate in school life as a whole under the professional supervision of teachers. This lays the professional foundations for the subsequent parts of the Master's degree course and for the traineeship (Referendariat). Detailed information on registration, scope and time frame can be found on the ZLB homepage.
