Why learn Spanish?
Spanish is a Romance language and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is not only an official language of the United Nations, but also the official language of Spain, numerous countries in Latin America, and Equatorial Guinea in Africa, with a total of more than 480 million native speakers.
As an international language of communication, Spanish plays a significant role in business, politics, culture, and academia, and is therefore an important component of university foreign language programs.

Registration and Unregistration
Registration for our Spanish courses in the 2026/27 winter semester takes place via unisono and is open during the first and second registration periods:
Registration Phase 1: August 17 – September 6, 2026
Registration Phase 2: September 21 – October 4, 2026
If you are unable to attend a course after all, you can drop the course via unisono from September 7 to September 20, 2026. After this date, please notify us by email at sprachenzentrum@spz.uni-siegen.de

Placement Test
If you have not taken a Spanish course at the Language Center in the past two semesters, please register for a Spanish course (“course of choice”) via unisono during the registration periods.
The selection of your preferred course is based on your personal assessment using the self-assessment grid
of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
If you have valid proof or a valid certificate of your language proficiency, a placement test is not required.
Our Spanish teachers
Spanish Program Coordinator
Natalia Velasco is the Spanish coordinator and a Spanish instructor; she is originally from Asturias, a beautiful region in northern Spain. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, meeting new people, and discovering other cultures.
Spanish teacher
Isabel Maurer Queipo is a lecturer in literature, culture, media, and Spanish. She holds a master’s degree in Romance studies, wrote her dissertation on Pedro Almodóvar, and her postdoctoral thesis on the aesthetics of the dreamlike.
More than 1,000 Spanish-language films are produced worldwide each year (Spain, Mexico, Latin America).
More than 100 million people worldwide are learning Spanish as a foreign language.
The alphabet has 27 letters (including ñ).
Flamenco was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
