Religion, according to a common notion, shaped people’s lives until it was supplanted by the “cold light” of science and reason during the Age of Enlightenment. In his 2022 book *The Shadow of God*, Michael Rosen describes the limitations of this narrative of secularization and shows that modern and (supposedly) secular worldviews remain, in many ways, deeply rooted in religion.
