Dealing with diversity is an everyday occurrence for teachers at school, and the diversity of pupils is the norm. Migration and inclusive school development have further increased the heterogeneity of learning groups in schools, which requires additional observation and diagnostic skills as well as a differentiated methodological and didactic approach. Additional knowledge and skills can be acquired in the TeacherPLUS specialization "Shaping Diversity" in order to promote the professional handling of diversity in schools. Linguistic and cultural diversity in the classroom

The multilingualism and multiculturalism of pupils requires good observation and diagnostic skills on the part of teachers, which also include intercultural aspects. The creation of cultural experience spaces and language-sensitive teaching are methodological and didactic skills for successful teaching. Conflict resolution and violence prevention skills (psychological and physical violence, racism and discrimination) are also relevant.

Inclusion: learning together

With the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the NRW school system, new challenges arise in dealing with heterogeneity in learning groups. Inclusion is a mandate to design joint learning, which at the same time also aims at differentiated learning and individual support. Teachers must develop practical observation, diagnosis and planning skills in order to be able to shape school and lesson development in terms of individual support and inclusion. They also need to work together in multi-professional teams, deal confidently with pupils, some of whom have behavioral problems, and work more closely with the parents of affected pupils.
