Person

Dr. Lawrence Wilde is a composer, educator, music theorist, and assistant professor of composition and music theory in post-digital educational spaces at the University of Siegen. His artistic research focuses on the intersection of sound, technology, and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on the postdigital condition: the understanding that digital and analog practices are no longer separate from one another but are now closely intertwined. In his work, Wilde explores how composition in postdigital contexts can contribute to ecological awareness and sustainability.

His compositions often combine digital and acoustic elements and view technology as an integral part of the creative process. Wilde’s research explores how materials, tools, and methods of musical production can respond to ecological concerns. In doing so, he challenges traditional boundaries of composition and contributes to broader discussions about sustainability, creativity, and our relationship with technology.

Described by The New York Times as “passionate and dramatically contoured,” Wilde’s music has been commissioned and performed by leading ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, JACK Quartet, So Percussion, the Tesla Quartet, the Berlin Academy of American Music, Ensemble Mise-En, ÆON Ensemble, and Variant 6, among others. His works have been presented internationally at major festivals and renowned venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical.

Wilde is director of the Studio for Postdigital Creativity Research (SpK) and the Postdigital Laptop Ensemble (PULSE) at the University of Siegen. He is a member of the Young Academy for Sustainability Research (YAS) at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Freiburg, as well as a member of the Young College of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Wilde has held research and teaching fellowships at Princeton University, the Juilliard School, and other institutions. In addition, he has received composition fellowships from the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, the Bang on a Can Music Festival, and other programs. He holds a Bachelor of Music in composition from The Juilliard School, as well as a Master of Fine Arts and a Ph.D. in composition from Princeton University.
