Digital Media and Methods

Media Studies Seminar

Digital Methods aim at appropriating and repurposing the methods of digital media for research. Such research, in turn, relies on the use of digital tools for collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data. While some of these tools are complex applications that are able to handle gigabytes or terabytes of data, many digital methods tools are relatively small applications with a specific purpose and limited scope. As genuine research tools these applications are not just a means of research, but also their result.

Tool development takes place as part of the ongoing research at the CRC Media of Cooperation and CRC Transformations of the Popular.

We have developed a 4 semester practice based BA Track called "Digital Methods Lab" which can be studied as part of the BA Media Studies
and the supplementary subject Digital Media & Technologies
(both in German).

We also teach digital methods and realise digital methods related projects at the MA Digital Media and Technologies
(English and German).
