Concept development for securing skilled workers for transport infrastructure in the civil engineering course at the University of Siegen (FaSiBI)

Academy funding program of the Federal Highway Research Institute

Project description

The civil engineering course at the University of Siegen is facing considerable challenges: falling numbers of first-year students, high drop-out rates coupled with a constantly high demand for skilled workers in administration, engineering offices and the private sector.

The project to develop a concept for securing skilled workers for transport infrastructure in the Civil Engineering course at the University of Siegen (FaSiBI) addresses the pilot development of concepts and measures to support existing students on the one hand and the target group-oriented acquisition of new students for the Civil Engineering course on the other.

In order to implement this, a close exchange with the student council and the students will be established, for example to make the start of studies easier and to support the progress of students. To this end, a tutor/mentor program is offered to first-year students on the Bachelor's degree course. Academic advising has been intensified.

Public relations measures are also planned, for example to create awareness of civil engineering with its broad range of tasks for a sustainable civil infrastructure through short image films for use in social media.

A package of measures will be used to address the challenges at the University of Siegen, create new incentives to study and, as a result, increase the number of new students and graduation rates.
