Dementia advisory boards
People with dementia, relatives and researchers work closely together in the Dementia Advisory Councils of Psychological Aging Research.
In line with the guiding principle"nothing about us without us", we not only want to conduct research on those affected - we want to shape research together with them.
We bring together the experiences of the advisory board members and scientific perspectives in an informal exchange in order to design research projects in such a way that they are relevant to everyday life and practical.
Exchange in a pleasant atmosphere
Once a month, people with dementia and their relatives come together in two advisory boards with researchers from the Department of Psychological Aging Research at the Lower Castle Campus of the University of Siegen.
Over coffee and cake, we discuss current research topics in an open and respectful atmosphere. We discuss new project ideas, provide feedback on ongoing studies and consider together how research can be geared even more towards the needs of those affected.
Participants contribute their personal experiences, suggestions and questions. At the same time, a space is created for encounters, exchange and personal growth in knowledge.
In addition, the university researchers provide information on current discourse and research findings on the topic of dementia, for example.
The shared exchange is of unimaginable value to us. To reward their work, the advisory board participants receive a financial allowance.

Funding bodies and cooperation partners
The advisory councils for people with dementia and relatives of people with dementia are supported as part of the PsychPart 2
project with funding from the Liesegang Foundation.
Another cooperation partner is the Alzheimer Gesellschaft Siegen-Wittgenstein e.V. The advisory board for people with dementia is supported by two moderators who have extensive experience in moderating self-help groups. In addition, the staff of the Alzheimer Society are available to advise the advisory board members and the research team on any questions they may have.
