Project description

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (bmbf) has approved 540,000 euros for research into "Innovative approaches to future-oriented continuing vocational training". Under the project management of Prof. Dr. Ulrike Buchmann and in close cooperation with the regional partners Franziskaner-Hof Attendorn and Seniorenzentrum St. Gerhardus Drolshagen, the research field 'care for the elderly' will be developed as an example for new forms of continuing vocational training.

This social field of action is of particular interest for vocational training research because it allows general problems to be investigated in a concentrated form, as they can also be seen in other areas of society and economic segments in the context of social transformation processes.

On this basis, institutional continuing education settings that promote development are being developed and tested, which in the medium term should help to establish a regional network or mentoring system "Continuing education culture, advice and care in the Olpe district". Furthermore, the establishment of a regional workshop for continuing education will create a forum for the flexible processing of regional continuing education needs and enable the transfer of research results to other economic segments.

Research objectives, procedure & results

Goals

Ongoing demographic change is confronting the field of elderly care with two types of problems: on the one hand, the number of older people is increasing the range of tasks performed by elderly care institutions, while on the other hand the number of potential employees is decreasing due to the falling birth rate. In addition, the number of young people with no or insufficient school qualifications is stagnating at a high level and the ratio of skilled workers in the field of elderly care is gradually being reduced. Inevitably, there will be competition for qualified trainees and employees, which will make it difficult for rural regions and sectors such as elderly care in particular to remain competitive. For this reason, the research project aims to design an adult-oriented institutional training setting in elderly care facilities that promotes development and generates potential.

Procedure

By dovetailing life, employment and further training situations, the aim is to enable all employee groups to catch up on the acquisition of skills and thus open up a situation-appropriate approach to social problems. It is not only the duty of care towards people who are increasingly restricted in their physical and mental abilities that poses new challenges for employees in elderly care, but also dealing with technical innovations in everyday working life ("Care 4.0"). This requires a high degree of new professionalism on the part of all geriatric care workers. To this end, an inclusive training curriculum is being developed, evaluated and implemented together with two partners from the regional elderly care sector.

Results

The research project itself is already part of the transfer of results - the joint development of a potential-generating personnel and organizational development concept based on educational science is an elementary component of the project. In the future, the establishment of a regional training workshop for the flexible processing of regional training needs is planned. The envisaged transfer to other economic sectors illustrates the economic relevance of the results: namely the avoidance of misallocations while at the same time securing the demand for skilled workers. The selection problem is seen as a development task for a learning institution, which is expected to reduce healthcare costs and improve the quality of care within the region.
