Rome Seminar 2017

Romseminar 2017

Mathematical Thinking

Encounters Between Mathematics and Philosophy

Rombuch 2017 as a PDF

- Joint excursion to Rome during the last week of February

The Rome Seminar offers a unique opportunity to look beyond the boundaries of one’s own field of study and explore the philosophical, historical, and cultural background of mathematics and its relationship to other disciplines. It is not subject to any examination regulations; credit points (LP) cannot be earned here.
Over the course of the winter semester, we will first explore and develop an understanding of the topic through shared reading, short introductory presentations, and discussions. By the end of December, each participant should have identified their own project. These projects will then be presented and discussed together with students from Kiel, Siegen, and Tübingen during the field trip in Rome. A varied accompanying program featuring otherwise inaccessible sites in Rome enriches the Rome seminar.
Prerequisites for the seminar include an interest in mathematics, the history of mathematics, and the philosophy of mathematics, as well as a willingness to engage deeply with the subject matter. The seminar is suitable for students starting in their first semester.
