Bachelor's and Master's thesis

All legal requirements regarding Bachelor's and Master's theses can be found in the relevant regulations.

Timing of your Bachelor thesis

Please note the following:

  • You should apply for admission to the Bachelor's thesis at least four weeks before the start date you have specified.
  • The processing time for the Bachelor's thesis is usually a maximum of 8 weeks (for empirical theses, this period can be extended by two weeks at the request of the first assessor).
  • The first and second assessors have a total of 6 weeks (old PO version) or 8 weeks (new PO version) to assess the Bachelor's thesis.

It will therefore generally take 18 to 20 weeks from registering the Bachelor's thesis at the Examinations Office to receiving the results, and up to 22 weeks for empirical theses. If you wish to complete your Bachelor's degree with your Bachelor's thesis and transfer to the Master of Education, please note that the Bachelor's thesis must be submitted by 30.09. in the summer semester and by 31.3. in the winter semester at the latest.

Timing of your Master's thesis

Please note the following:

  • You should apply for admission to the Master's thesis at least four weeks before the start date you have specified.
  • As a rule, the maximum processing time for the Master's thesis is 15 weeks (for empirical theses, this period can be extended by 4 weeks at the request of the first assessor).
  • The first and second assessors have a total of 6 weeks (old PO version) or 8 weeks (new PO version) to assess the Master's thesis.

It will therefore generally take 25 to 27 weeks from the time the Master's thesis is registered at the Examination Office until the result is communicated, and up to 31 weeks for empirical theses.

Bachelor's thesis

  • Successful completion of all internships Proof of internships can be submitted at a later date before the topic of the Bachelor's thesis is issued.
  • Proof of language skills Proof of language skills in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Master's thesis
  • min. 60 credit points (CP) Your transcript of records in unisono

  • Fulfillment of subject-specific requirements Information on subject-specific requirements can be found in the subject-specific provisions
    in § 8.
  • Successful completion of the internship semester is recommended It is recommended to complete the internship semester before working on the Master's thesis.
  • NOTE: For all students who enrolled in the Bachelor's degree program for teaching at grammar schools and comprehensive schools at the University of Siegen in the winter semester 2011/2012: Proof of language proficiency according to § 4 paragraph 4 of the examination regulations for the Bachelor's degree program for teaching qualifications.
  • Information on previous attempts Information on any Ba and Ma theses that have already been started, abandoned or not passed. (See application form)

If the requirements are met, the application for admission can be submitted at any time, but no later than four weeks before the start of writing the Bachelor's or Master's thesis specified by you.

The application for admission to final theses is made by e-mail. Please send the complete, fully completed and signed documents as a pdf by e-mail to the Central Examination Office for Teaching Qualifications.

You have the right to nominate first and second assessors, which you should make use of. In particular, contact the first reviewer beforehand and clarify whether they can take on the supervision of your thesis and the topic and have them sign the confirmation form. Alternatively, the first reviewer can also confirm the supervision of your thesis in a direct email to the Examination Office. This must not be a forwarded email or similar.

Scope of the Bachelor's thesis

As a rule, the Bachelor's thesis should not exceed 30 pages without appendices. If you exceed or fall short of the number of pages by more than approx. 10%, you should agree this with the first assessor.

 

Scope of the Master's thesis

As a rule, the Master's thesis should not exceed 60 pages without appendices. If you exceed or fall short of the number of pages by more than approx. 10%, you should agree this with the first supervisor.

 

Written assurance (Ba and Ma thesis)

The following signed and dated written declaration must be attached to the thesis as the last page:

"I declare that I have prepared the written thesis independently and have not used any aids other than those specified. I have clearly identified all passages that are taken from other works in terms of wording or meaning (including translations) as borrowed material in each individual case, stating the exact source (including the World Wide Web as well as generative AI and other electronic data collections). This also applies to attached drawings, pictorial representations, sketches and the like. I acknowledge that the proven omission of the indication of origin will be regarded as attempted deception."

Recommendations for formatting (Ba and Ma thesis)
  • Font: Arial
  • Font size: 11pt, footnotes 9pt
  • Line spacing: 1.5
  • Margins: 2.5 cm left, 3.5 cm right; 2.5 cm top, 2.5 cm bottom

Deviations from the formatting recommendations should be discussed in advance with the Master's thesis supervisor.

 

Binding and submission of the thesis (Ba and Ma thesis)

The thesis must be firmly bound (no spiral or saddle stitching!) Please send the theses in

The date of submission is the date on which the digital thesis is sent by e-mail.

a) Illness during the completion period:

If the candidate falls ill, the deadline for submitting the Bachelor's thesis can be extended by up to two weeks, and by up to four weeks for the Master's thesis. The illness must be reported immediately (no later than three working days after the start of the illness) by email and supported by a medical certificate.

 

b) Return of the topic:

The topic of a Bachelor's or Master's thesis can be returned once and only within 1 week of the start of the processing period. The Central Examination Office must be notified of the return of the topic in writing and no later than one week after the start of the processing period, not by e-mail. In this case, a new admission to the Bachelor's or Master's thesis must be applied for.

 

c) Withdrawal from the Bachelor's or Master's thesis:

If it is not possible to meet the submission deadline for valid reasons, these must be reported to the Central Examination Board immediately (within three working days, the date of the postmark applies) in writing via the Central Examination Office and substantiated by appropriately detailed evidence. This written request to withdraw from the thesis must be submitted to the Examination Board at least one day before the deadline. If the Examination Board recognizes these reasons, the Bachelor's or Master's thesis is deemed not to have been undertaken. The candidate will receive written notification of this.

Once you have been notified of the grade for your Bachelor's or Master's thesis, you have the opportunity to request access to the reports within one month (see § 25 Framework Examination Regulations). Please use the form for inspection of files
and send it to us completed and signed by e-mail.
